Lent 2014 begins on Ash Wednesday which falls on March 5th, 2014. Eastern Rite Catholics celebrate the beginning of Lent two days prior on Clean Monday, March 3rd, 2014.
How Long Is Lent?
Lent usually lasts 40 days in commemoration of the 40 days spent fasting by the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and Jesus in the desert. Most of the population of Western Christianity observe lent as beginning on Ash Wednesday. They believe that it ends on Maudy Thursday, also known as Holy Thursday, or on Easter Eve. Sundays aren’t often considered days that are in observance of the Lent Rules. Lent ends on Holy Saturday which falls on April 19th, 2014.
There are 40 days of Lent, but it all actuality, the entire celebration is over the course of 46 days. Since Lent isn’t observed on Sundays, they don’t count towards the overall 40 days. There are 6 weeks of Lent with 6 days of Lent each of those 6 weeks. There are then the extra 4 days from Ash Wednesday, and the following Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
